100% Merino wool
Hand felted
2012
Felting is the most ancient textile technique. Felt is formed by placing wool fibers in layers, wetting them, and pressing them together by applying pressure and friction. The structure of the wool fiber with its microscopic “scales” reminiscent of palm tree trunks cause the fibers to cling to each other irreversibly to create an extremely strong, stable piece textile.
In this series I examined a technique I developed to create a mathematically logical repetitive pattern that is usually uncharacteristic of felt. Using this method, the pattern and the object itself are made in a single action. The form is constructed in layers surrounding a last, resulting in a seamless bag.
All of the bags are reversible, thus displaying a different pattern on each side.
