Kibutz Lohamei Hagetaot Art Gallery
Curators: Michal Horowitz and Yeshaayahu Ish Gabay
2017
A 3 x 2.5m floor piece, made from about 3,000 books, was created as a site-specific work for the Gallery.
The carpet, a familiar item, is here to simulate discussion and propose a re-reading of its traditional place (which only seems to be a given). The discussion itself takes place on the carpet, enabling an examination of material and structure, object and symbol, thought and memory.
The carpet was made from another familiar and easily identifiable object: books. Books were used here as material objects which are geometric and mechanical, with paper, stitching, binding, lines, fonts, ink, and the action of paging through it. Bearing cultural value, books carry language, writing, syntax, punctuation, narrative, poetry, parable, and prayer.
The books become a concrete and conceptual library moving through the spaces of time and consciousness.
